Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne welcomed the FATF/APG 2026 Mutual Evaluation Report, saying Canada improved on its 2016 assessment and achieved the strongest follow-up outcome available under the FATF process. The government pointed to strengths in risk assessment, domestic and international cooperation, use of financial intelligence and counter-terrorist financing, while acknowledging further work is needed on supervisory effectiveness, beneficial ownership transparency, complex money laundering investigations and prosecutions, and asset recovery. Champagne said Ottawa plans to advance those priorities through the proposed Financial Crimes Agency, measures targeting criminal abuse of money services businesses, including a crypto ATM ban, and reforms enacted through Bill C-12. FATF placed Canada in regular follow-up and issued a three-year roadmap of recommended actions.
