A Halifax man accused of making a bomb threat against the U.S. Consulate has been charged with a terrorism-related offence under the Criminal Code. Federal prosecutors laid an additional charge of threatening an internationally protected person against 54-year-old Ali Assakereh, which the Crown described in court as a terrorism offence and terrorist activity. The charge follows an investigation by Halifax Regional Police and the RCMP’s National Security Enforcement Section after a threat prompted the evacuation of part of downtown Halifax and police found a propane tank and containers of flammable liquid in a vehicle parked near the consulate. Assakereh had previously been charged with uttering threats and public mischief, and the allegations have not been proven in court.
